Step 1: Prep 'n Prime
There are no differences at this stage from what I did for the Smoke Jaguar Daishi, first you assemble the mini and glue it on a hex base. Then paint some glue on the base and dip it in sand. Let dry.
I then sprayed it with white primer
I could then make ready what I'd be using for this mini :
Red brown and black inks
3 shades of acrylic yellow paint
Red and green paints
Gunmetal and Silver paints
3 brushes : 2, 0, 000
Step 2: Base Colors
Fire Mandrill Kindraa Kline uses a yellow scheme with green and red highlights. The first step will be to do a good yellow base.
First, I used several layers of darkest yellow wash to get my base with a size 2 brush:
Then I made a mix of water, matte medium and red brown ink and washed the panel lines and recesses with a size 0 brush:
The next step was highlighting the edges, first with medium then with some light yellow paint (size 2 and 0 brushes):
Step 3: Metallic parts and weapons
I started with painting the actuators, heat sinks and other various metallic parts silver, and then gave them a black wash (black ink, medium, water):
It was then time to wash the various weapons with Gunmetal using a size 2 brush. I washed it first with black ink mixed with medium and water. When it was dry, I gave it a light drybrush with gunmetal, then silver.
I then painted the missiles white and gave them a light black wash, redoing the tips with some white paint.
Step 4: Highlights and canopy
It was time to do the finishing. Distinctive red and green highlights have been painted with a size 0 brush. I chose a blue hue for the canopy (and used a 000 brush) :
Step 5: Basing & Sealing
The base is merely painted, first a heavy wash of red ochre paint, than a wash of Devlan mud. This is followed by a drybrush of yellow ochre and another one of bleached bone. The hex base is then painted black.
A first gloss seal is sprayed, and decals are applied when it has dried for a day. Some glue is painted on the base, and it is again dipped into the scatter material, Make sure your mini is really dry at this stage!
A last layer of matte seal is then sprayed, and the mini is left to dry, ready to be photographed,
Here is the finished result:
